Kanaya-juku is currently Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is one of the most difficult places on the Tokaido, as sung in a horseman's song: "You can cross the Hakone 8 ri on horseback, but you cannot cross the Oi River." The shogunate prohibited the construction of bridges over the Oi River in order to defend the Kanto region, so people had to hire laborers to cross it . In this work, the rapids of the Oi River and the way people cross it on shoulders or in a palanquin are depicted in the most detailed detail of the series , and we hope you will also pay attention to the superb skills of the printers and carvers. Each and every hair on the person's hair is drawn. The water droplets on the laborers' skin and the bones of their hats are rubbed three-dimensionally with unevenness less than 1 mm in size. The texture of the ground and mist, which are similar in color, also differs depending on the way they are rubbed. In addition, the flag of Shimada-juku on the opposite bank is "Ei", and advertisements for the publisher Nishimuraya Eijudo , such as "Kotobuki" and "Yamagata with three-common crest", are painted on the furoshiki and chests of passersby.
