GOMA ART EXHIBITION
in HOKUSAI: ANOTHER STORY
ARTIST MESSAGE
Being in touch with the power and beauty of nature is what drives me to create. In particular, the motifs of Mt. Fuji and waves have had a special place in my heart ever since I first started painting. When I see Mt. Fuji, I feel lucky and happy, as if fate is on my side. I hope to express this feeling through my paintings and convey that joy and energy to those who view them.
When I was approached about collaborating with Katsushika Hokusai, I wondered what kind of scenery Hokusai would have painted if he had been able to continue creating with a modern airplane or drone in hand.
This exhibition expresses this "world where modern and traditional intersect." Using techniques that were unimaginable in the time of Hokusai, the magnificent landscapes he would have painted have been reconstructed from a modern perspective.
This time, he will be exhibiting three pieces from a series of works themed around Mount Fuji and waves, which he has been painting for many years.
Please come to the venue and experience the new world of Katsushika Hokusai x GOMA.
ARTIST
GOMA is a didgeridoo musician and painter. In 1998, he won second place at the Didgeridoo Competition held in Gbarnga, Australia. Since then, he has been active in music festivals both in Japan and abroad. In 2009, he was involved in a traffic accident and stopped his musical activities due to symptoms of high-level brain dysfunction. However, after the accident, he began painting with detailed pointillism. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions at venues such as Shinjuku Takashimaya Art Gallery (2019), PARCO Museum Tokyo (2022), and GYRE Gallery (2024). In 2024, as part of a project by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, GOMA will perform a spectacular production of his masterpiece ``The World of Light'' in the sky above Expo Commemoration Park using a thousand drones. Even now, through his unique fusion of music, art, and storytelling, he continues to inspire audiences by demonstrating the power of overcoming adversity and the transformative power of art.
