Introduction

This work is said to be one of Hokusai's greatest masterpieces, and is also known among ukiyo-e. The raging waves and the people on the boat are helpless against the fury of nature. Behind them lies Mount Fuji. The viewer feels as if they too are drifting on the ocean, looking up at the big waves and catching a glimpse of Mount Fuji among the waves. Three boats can be seen among the waves. These wooden boats were called "Oshokuri boats." Eight heads are lined up, four on each side of the two boats on the right side.

This is a high-speed boat rowed on a hatchoro (rudders) through Edo Bay. The boat's purpose was to catch bonito (tuna). It purchased bonito caught by local fishermen at sea and returned at full speed to the fish market in Nihonbashi. It is said that every time Edoites saw this picture, they were reminded of the first bonito of the season and their appetites were stimulated.
