作品説明

In this work, Picasso was gazing at "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" in his studio and felt that something was missing, so he added a woman screaming before the raging waves. Her face is violently distorted, and her scream seems to blend in with the waves. The contours of her face intersect with the curves of the waves, and the contrast between the calm of the sea and the intensity of her scream creates a strong sense of tension. This work reflects an "inner chaos" that emerges as the suffering of nature and humanity intertwine between the silence and the storm.

"Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa" is an ukiyo-e woodblock print created by Katsushika Hokusai around 1831, and is the best-known piece from "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." In the background of this dynamic composition, in which a giant wave is about to engulf a small boat, is a silent Mount Fuji, vividly expressing the contrast between the power of nature and human activities.

The boat that appears in the painting is called an "Oshiokuri-bune," and is a real transport ship that transported fresh fish and vegetables from the coasts of Izu and Boso to Edo. In this way, Hokusai's work realistically reflects the lifestyle and economic activity of the time. In terms of color, he used a pigment called "Prussian Blue," which was newly imported from Europe, and the unprecedented deep and vivid blue brings out the strength of the waves. Furthermore, the composition that incorporates perspective emphasizes the depth between the waves in the foreground and Mount Fuji in the background, making this a highly innovative work visually.

This print had a major impact on artists in Japan and the West. The painter Van Gogh praised Hokusai in a letter to his brother Theo, and the composer Debussy is said to have been inspired by this work to compose his symphonic poem La Mer. Due to its popularity, many editions of The Great Wave off Kanagawa have been produced, and excellent first editions are housed in renowned art museums both in Japan and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the MOA Museum of Art. With its powerful composition, delicate colors, and timeless, universal theme, it continues to fascinate people around the world even today.
