作品説明

In this artwork, Picasso lifts a kite with a smile of defiance, as if trying to make his ego soar higher than Fuji itself. He’s immersed in a Hokusai painting, watching the mountain turn red in the sun set, an explosion of colour that challenges stillness.

The wind blows strong, but Picasso doesn’t notice. The only thing that matters is the kite, his personal struggle with the mountain, the desire to rise above it all.

He cannot stand that Hokusai, in his stillness, has flown higher than him, and he certainly cannot bear that Fuji remains towering above his restless soul.

The kite trembles in the air, rising and falling, as if playing along with him. And as the landscape merges in a dance of light and shadow, Picasso bursts out laughing. There’s no resentment, only amusement.

He realizes he’s been fighting all his life, like a constant game against the universe, and that this struggle, this need to surpass, is an essential part of his being. It’s because of that relentless drive that he’s become Pablo Picasso, the man who, like his kite, will never stop flying, defying, and being greater than Fuji.

Gaifū kaisei also known as Red Fuji, is one of the most iconic prints from Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. It captures a rare and beautiful moment on a summer morning when the southern wind blows and the clear sky allows the rising sun to bathe Mount Fuji in a brilliant red hue.

In the image, the slopes of the mountain glow in red, while the base is lined with lush green forest. Wispy clouds known as "iwashi-gumo" float in the blue sky above. The strong contrast between the warm red and cool green, along with the rhythmical brushwork of the trees, creates a striking sense of depth and stillness. The composition, with its wide open sky and perfect balance, conveys a quiet yet powerful presence.

This print also reflects the cultural and spiritual significance of Mount Fuji in Japan. At the time, a popular folk belief known as the Fujikō saw the mountain as sacred. Hokusai’s portrayal can be seen as a visual expression of Mount Fuji as a spiritual symbol, combining natural beauty with a deep sense of reverence.
